Iron Man 2: Who is Whiplash?

By reagu

Are you a comic book geek? I am. And over the Christmas break, I began seeing trailers for the upcoming Iron Man 2 movie. I thought the first one was fantastic and I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel. Robert Downey, Jr. is spot on as Tony Stark. He really did great to catapult Iron Man into the A-list of super heroes. The A-list, of course, being Superman, Batman, Spider-man, and, maybe, Wolverine.

One thing I was curious with was which villain will the movie makers (director Jon Favreau, writer Justin Theroux, Marvel Studios, et al) select to complement Iron Man in the sequel. My preference was the Mandarin, the arch villain in the Iron Man comic book series. He's a scientific genius and has inheritance of great wealth that seem to come directly from Genghis Khan. And he's ambitious enough to want to take over the world.

By the way, what's with rich geniuses trying to rule the world (Lex Luthor, Dr. Doom, Syndrome)?

Whiplash is da man!

In any case, the bad guy in Iron Man 2 will be Whiplash, a gifted engineer who likes to make weapons and use them to live the high roller life of crime. Gangsta! He prefers, just as his name indicates, to use whips. Not leather whips, but high tech whips made of special materials that could rip into steel.

Although he's a genius, Whiplash has always been a criminal-for-hire. He works for someone higher up in the Marvel criminal universe, whether it be Justin Hammer (a rival of Tony Stark) or the Maggia crime syndicate. I suppose in today's terms, Whiplash is not an A personality. He doesn't aspire to rule a domain. But he is considered a valuable member of any super-powered crime team as he has teamed up with other costumed criminals such as Melter, Man-Bull, and the Wraith.

I guess what I'm saying is that Whiplash, who is also known as Blacklash in other comic book issues, is not what comic book fans would consider as a big enough character to be featured in a blockbuster movie.

Mickey Rourke is da man!

But then again, Mickey Rourke will be bringing him to life. Mickey f&$%in' Rourke! That's Marv. He's Johnny Handsome. And Harley Davidson. The baddest dudes on screen.

In an interview about his role in the Iron Man 2 movie, Mickey Rourke said that Whiplash has plenty of tattoos because he just got out of a Russian prison. Thus, it seems that Whiplash in the movie will not have the same back story as the comic books. That gives the Favreau and his team much more room to play with in order to make an interesting character. Since they did such as a superb job the first time around, the freedom to make up a more interesting back story for Whiplash gives the comic book fans that much more reason to see the sequel.

Hot Toys releases the Iron Man 2: Whiplash Action Figure. The details are exceptional. They did a great job creating an action figure of Mickey Rourke.  The 12" action figure includes highly detailed tattoos on Ivan Vanko's neck, arms, palms, fingers, and upper body.  He's holding a pair of electric-flashing whips.  The chest piece lights up (battery-operated).  And hydraulic exoskeleton.

  • Resolved Question: Marvel Studio Easter Eggs/References? (Just for fun)?

Can anyone give me an updated Easter Egg/Theory/Secrets list on the Marvel Studio movies leading up to the Avengers? Each time I do a search online most of the findings are before the next movie in the series was released or based off the trailer and now that all the movies revolving around the Avengers is done shouldn't there be a complete list/theory? Here's what I got so far: Iron Man: Captain Americas Shield makes it's first appearance initiating the Avengers movie and rumors Shield makes it's first appearance War Machine's reference "Next Time" Ten Rings Terrorists Nick Fury after credits (Avengers confirmation) Whiplash references The Incredible Hulk: Stark Technology tieing in the Hulk to the Avengers movie Captain America frozen body in deleted scene Wendigo reference? Thor reference? (Hulk getting mad at the lightning/thunder) Doc Samson "The Leader" is born (Mr. Blue) Stark and Ross meet up at end (another Avengers confirmation) Iron Man 2: War Machine in action Whiplash appearance Black Widow introduced Fing Fang Foom Poster Ten Rings are back Map on screen at end when Tony's talking to Nick Fury has Africa as a point of interest (Black Panther?) The sea is also a point of interest, so, Namor?? Thor reference after credits Thor: Cosmic cube makes it's first appearance Hawkeye appearance Luke Cage appearance?? (Shield agent who Thor fought the longest) Donald Blake reference The Infinity Gauntlet appears along with others in Odins vault Hulk reference Hank Pym reference Loki lives in after credit scene Captain America: Cosmic cube makes a comeback Original Human Torch costume makes appearance Zola introduced Zola has a blueprint of his soon to be robotic suit Bucky Barnes "dies" Marvel Fans would know he makes a comeback as the Winter Soldier and eventually Captain America After-credit is Avengers trailer That's all I've found, or could remember, other than of course all the Stan Lee cameos and hints at the original comics/series but if anyone knows any others please feel free to comment and inform me more :) BONUS: Do you think Spiderman will make an appearance in the Avengers? Although owned by different companies an observer of the filming process said she saw Spiderman in the group of Avengers. This of course would be smart of Sony to allow considering how much money it could help make "The Amazing Spiderman" but then again it was observed by someone who probably knew nothing about the heroes themselves. - 5 weeks ago

  • Resolved Question: Iron Man 2 - No one had a gun to shoot Whiplash at the F1?

Whiplash was like invincible at the F1 track. Let's assume he was that lucky to avoid any debris from the F1 cars getting destroyed, NO ONE SHOT HIM DOWN? Would think that security at any F1 track would have a small police force... - 3 months ago

It would be nice if they get around to the Mandarin. If Captain America and the Avengers movie does well enough, they ought to consider the Civil War storyline.

It seems likely they will drop hints at The Mandarin in this film, keep your eyes out! The director has stated he wanted to use the Mandarin for this film, but decided that, like with The Emperor from Star Wars, it would be better to drop foreshadow and then reveal him in a future film.

The popularity of Iron Man just keeps growing. I'm not sure where I read it, but there are predictions out there that Iron Man will be the lead Avenger, instead of Captain America, when that movie comes out. I suppose when you have a choice between Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans as your lead actor, you'd want to go with RDJ.

I wonder if all engineers are all buffed up like Rourke is portraying in the movie :P by the way I also posted about Whiplash yesterday: http://actionfiguresbuff-jon.com/iron-man-2-whipla

I think Iron Man 2 will be for 2010 what the Dark Knight was for 2009.
